Skin Renewal

Anti-Aging Vaccines

A group of microinjection treatments that deliver hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids or polynucleotides into the skin to support hydration, elasticity and the skin’s own repair processes.

What are anti-aging vaccines and how do they work?

Anti-aging vaccines — often called youth vaccines or skin boosters — are not vaccines in the immunological sense. The name comes from the method rather than the content: an active solution is delivered into the skin through very fine needles, in a series of small injections spread across the treatment area.

Skin ageing has two overlapping causes. Chronological ageing gradually slows down the fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin, while sun exposure, smoking and air pollution accelerate the breakdown of the existing fibre network. The result is skin that holds less water, reflects less light and creases more easily.

These injections work on that background in two ways. The substances themselves — most often hyaluronic acid — bind water in the dermis, which improves suppleness and surface light reflection fairly quickly. At the same time, the microtrauma of the needle and the presence of the active ingredients stimulate fibroblast activity, so the skin’s own repair mechanism is encouraged over the following weeks. The second effect is the slower and more lasting one.

Several different solutions are grouped under the same heading, and they do not do the same job:

  • Hyaluronic acid based hydration solutions are non-cross-linked, so they do not add volume like a filler. They spread within the tissue and act on skin quality: hydration, softness and fine surface lines.
  • Vitamin and amino acid mixtures supply the building blocks and antioxidants that collagen synthesis depends on. They are commonly chosen for dull, tired-looking skin.
  • Polynucleotide solutions — sometimes described as salmon DNA — contain purified nucleotide chains and are preferred where the aim is tissue repair and calming of an irritated, thin or reactive skin.
  • Collagen-stimulating solutions target loss of elasticity rather than dryness, and are usually planned as a course of sessions with wider intervals.

Which solution suits you depends on your skin type, your age, the area to be treated and what actually bothers you about your skin. At Zen Polyclinic the choice is made after a skin assessment, not from a fixed menu.

In which situations are they preferred?

Dryness and loss of light. Skin that looks matte and tired despite a good topical routine is the most typical indication. Hydration-focused solutions act on exactly this complaint.

Fine surface lines. Lines that appear when the skin is dry and soften when it is well moisturised respond better than deep, structural folds. Deep folds are a different problem and are assessed separately.

Early loss of elasticity. Skin that has begun to feel less firm, particularly on the cheeks, neck and décolletage, is a common reason for collagen-oriented protocols.

Sun-related skin damage. Years of cumulative ultraviolet exposure leave the skin rougher and less even in tone. Antioxidant-containing mixtures are often preferred here as supportive treatment.

Areas outside the face. The neck, décolletage and back of the hands age visibly but are often neglected. These regions are frequently treated together with the face.

What these treatments do not do should be equally clear. They do not replace volume that has been lost, they do not lift sagging tissue and they do not remove deep static wrinkles. When those are the main concern, a different plan is needed and will be explained to you during the consultation.

How does the procedure progress?

Assessment. Skin type, existing complaints, previous aesthetic procedures, chronic illnesses, medication and allergies are reviewed. The solution and the number of sessions are decided at this stage.

Preparation. The area is cleansed and disinfected. A topical anaesthetic cream is usually applied and left for around twenty minutes, so most people describe the session as tolerable rather than painful.

Application. The solution is injected in small quantities at regular intervals across the treatment area, either by hand or with an injector device. A facial session generally takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Afterwards. Small red points and slight swelling at the injection sites are expected and usually settle within a few hours to a day. Minor bruising is possible. Make-up, sauna, pool, intense exercise and direct sun are avoided for the first day, and sun protection is recommended throughout the course.

Course and maintenance. These treatments are almost always planned as a series — commonly three to four sessions two to four weeks apart — followed by maintenance sessions at longer intervals. A single session is not the way this method is intended to be used.

Who is not suitable?

Microinjection treatments are low-risk in appropriate candidates, but they are not for everyone:

  • Active skin infection, inflamed acne or an open wound in the treatment area
  • Known allergy to any component of the solution
  • Bleeding disorders, or ongoing blood-thinning treatment that cannot be interrupted
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Autoimmune or connective tissue disease under active treatment
  • A tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Recent isotretinoin use — an interval is usually required before treatment

Please tell us about your medications, chronic conditions and any previous injectable procedures before the session. Some of these do not rule out treatment, but they do change how it is planned and timed.

When do results become visible?

The hydration effect is the first to appear. Many people notice that the skin feels softer and looks brighter within the first week, because the injected hyaluronic acid binds water immediately. This early change is real but not the lasting part of the result.

The fibroblast-related effects develop more slowly. New collagen production takes weeks, so improvements in texture and firmness build gradually and are usually clearest four to eight weeks after the course is completed.

Duration varies from person to person. Age, skin condition, sun exposure, smoking and sleep all influence how long the effect is maintained. Because the skin continues to age, results are not permanent and maintenance sessions are part of the plan rather than an afterthought. No specific outcome can be promised in advance.

Use alongside other procedures

Anti-aging injections work on skin quality, so they combine well with methods that address other layers of the ageing process. They are often planned in the same period as mesotherapy protocols, or alternated with dermapen microneedling sessions to support skin renewal. Where volume loss or sagging is the dominant issue, they are used as a complement to structural treatments rather than instead of them. You can also read our general skin renewal page for an overview of the available options.

Timing matters when procedures are combined, and spacing is decided during planning so that the skin has time to settle between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Are anti-aging vaccines actually vaccines?
No. The word describes the injection technique, not the content. These solutions contain substances such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids or polynucleotides and have no immunological effect.
Is the procedure painful?
The needles are very fine and a topical anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand. Most people describe a brief stinging sensation at each injection point rather than pain.
How many sessions are needed?
A course of three to four sessions, two to four weeks apart, is common, followed by maintenance. The exact plan depends on the solution used and on your skin.
Can I return to work the same day?
Yes. Small red points and slight swelling are expected and typically settle within hours to a day. Bruising is possible, so scheduling before an important event is not ideal.
How is it different from a filler?
Fillers are cross-linked products placed to create volume or shape. These solutions are not cross-linked; they spread within the skin and act on hydration and skin quality without adding volume.
Can it be applied to the neck, décolletage and hands?
Yes. These areas show ageing clearly and are frequently treated alongside the face during the same session.
