Body Contouring

Onda Coolwaves

A non-invasive body contouring technology that uses 2.45 GHz microwaves to reach subcutaneous fat while an integrated cooling system protects the skin surface.

What is Onda Coolwaves and how does it work?

Onda Coolwaves is a body contouring device that delivers microwave energy at a frequency of 2.45 GHz into the tissue beneath the skin. Unlike methods that work from the surface downwards, the energy is designed to be absorbed selectively by fat cells, which have a different water and fat content than the skin and connective tissue above them.

Three things happen in the treated area during a session:

  • Selective heating of adipose tissue. The microwave energy is preferentially absorbed by subcutaneous fat cells, raising their temperature to a level at which the cell membrane loses its integrity. The released content is then cleared gradually by the body’s own metabolic and lymphatic pathways.
  • Effect on the connective tissue septa. The fibrous bands that run between fat lobules and the skin are involved in the dimpled appearance associated with cellulite. Controlled heating of this layer is intended to soften and remodel those structures over time.
  • Dermal response. Heat reaching the deeper dermis stimulates fibroblasts, which supports new collagen production and, in turn, gradual firming of the skin overlying the treated area.

The handpiece carries a cooling plate that is active throughout the application. Because the epidermis is cooled while the energy passes through it, the surface stays at a comfortable temperature while the deeper layers reach the working temperature. This is what allows the treatment to be carried out without anaesthesia and without an incision.

The handpiece is moved continuously over the marked area; the integrated cooling plate keeps the skin surface comfortable throughout.

In which situations is it preferred?

Localised fat deposits. The most common indication is a limited, stubborn fat pad that has not responded to diet and exercise — typically the abdomen, flanks, outer and inner thighs, buttocks or the upper arms. Onda Coolwaves is a contouring method for such areas, not a weight-loss treatment and not a substitute for a healthy body weight.

Cellulite appearance. Because the technology acts on both the fat layer and the fibrous septa between it and the skin, it is often chosen where the skin has an uneven, orange-peel texture on the thighs or buttocks.

Mild skin laxity. Where the skin over a treated area has lost some of its tone, the collagen response can contribute to a firmer texture. Marked laxity or excess skin after significant weight loss is a different problem and is assessed separately.

Contour irregularities after other procedures. Small asymmetries or residual fullness may be addressed with a contouring approach; whether it is suitable depends on the time elapsed and the state of the tissue, and is decided during the consultation.

How does the application proceed?

Assessment and planning. The area is examined, skin quality and the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer are evaluated, and your medical history — including medication, implants and any chronic condition — is reviewed. The number of sessions and the energy settings are planned on this basis.

Marking. The treatment zone is drawn on the skin so that the handpiece can be moved over a defined area and the energy distributed evenly.

Application. A coupling gel is applied and the handpiece is moved over the marked area in continuous passes. Most people describe a deep, spreading warmth rather than pain. A session usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on the size of the area.

Afterwards. The gel is removed and the area may be gently massaged. There is no dressing and no recovery period; you can return to your usual routine the same day. Drinking enough water and staying physically active support the metabolic clearance of the treated fat.

Who is it not suitable for?

Onda Coolwaves is a non-invasive application, but it is not appropriate for everyone. It is generally avoided in the following situations:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Pacemakers, defibrillators or other electronic implants; metal implants in or near the treatment area
  • Heart failure or severe cardiovascular disease
  • Severe coagulation disorders or the use of anticoagulant medication, depending on the physician’s assessment
  • Current or recent cancer treatment
  • Active skin infection, open wound or dermatological disease in the treatment area
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, particularly where sensation in the area is reduced
  • Hernia in the abdominal wall within the planned treatment zone

Please tell us about any implanted device, medication you take regularly and any chronic condition before the session. Some of these do not rule out the treatment but do change how it is planned.

When do results become visible?

The change is gradual, because the body needs time to clear the affected fat cells and to build new collagen. A reduction in circumference is often measurable within the first few weeks, while the change in skin texture and firmness develops more slowly.

Sessions are typically spaced around two to four weeks apart, and a course of one to several sessions is planned according to the area and the findings at assessment. The collagen-related effect continues to develop for a period after the final session. Individual response varies with age, skin quality, the thickness of the fat layer, hormonal factors and lifestyle, so no fixed outcome can be promised in advance.

The treated fat cells do not return, but the remaining cells can still enlarge. A stable body weight, regular activity and a balanced diet are what preserve the result over time.

Use alongside other applications

Body contouring is usually planned as a combination rather than a single method. Onda Coolwaves is often considered together with cellulite mesotherapy where the skin texture is the main complaint, or with injection lipolysis for smaller, well-defined fat pads. Where skin tightening is the priority, HIFU may be discussed as a complementary option.

Compared with surgical fat removal, Onda Coolwaves involves no incision, no anaesthesia and no downtime — but it also works within different limits. It reduces a localised fat layer and improves texture; it does not remove large volumes and it does not correct significant skin excess. Which approach fits your expectations is decided during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the treatment hurt?
Most people describe a deep, spreading warmth rather than pain. The cooling plate on the handpiece keeps the skin surface comfortable, so no anaesthesia is needed.
How many sessions are needed?
This depends on the size of the area, the thickness of the fat layer and your expectations. A plan is made after assessment; sessions are usually spaced two to four weeks apart.
Is there any downtime?
No. The area may look slightly pink or feel warm for a short while afterwards. You can return to your normal daily activities the same day.
Is it a weight-loss method?
No. It is a contouring application for localised fat and skin texture. It is not a treatment for obesity and does not replace diet and exercise.
Can it be applied to the face?
Onda Coolwaves is designed for body areas. Facial concerns are addressed with different technologies, which are discussed at the consultation.
Will the fat come back?
The cells affected during treatment are cleared by the body and do not return, but the remaining fat cells can enlarge if body weight increases. Maintaining a stable weight preserves the result.
